Midtown Omaha On The Move!
Have you heard about Midtown on the Move?
If you're unfamiliar, it's friendly challenge to incorporate alternative modes of transportation right here in our fabulous Midtown neighborhood
Just pledge to leave your car behind one trip a week to get to your destination by walking, biking, taking the bus, or ridesharing. For instance, if you swap your car trip by taking your bike to and from your destination, that counts as 2 trips.
Midtownonthemove.org gives some pretty darn good reasons for taking the pledge:
When you walk, bike, bus or rideshare, you discover new parts of your neighborhood and meet new people. You’re likely to gain a fresh perspective on where you live and what is happening in your neighborhood and can better appreciate your surroundings.
By leaving the car behind, you’ll save money on gas and parking and won’t have to deal with the hassles of traffic congestion or finding a parking spot. You’ll also make a positive impact on the environment. With fewer cars on the road, pollution is reduced and air quality improves.
Choosing more active modes of transportation also provides many health benefits. You’ll build in physical activity that helps maintain your cardiovascular health, prevent chronic disease such as diabetes, and reduce stress.
By taking the pledge, you pinkie swear to:
- Switch one car trip each week and walk, bike, ride the bus, or share a ride instead.
- Encourage at least three friends and neighbors to take this pledge.
Ok, I made up the pinky swear thing, but I like that kind of serious commitment. Full disclosure - I'm counting you, dear readers, as my three friends and neighbors.
There are prizes to win each week (see list of awesome sponsors on the website), but as a super bonus, there are 2 early bird sign-up grand prizes:
Pledge by May 15 for your chance to win one of the following:
- Kona Dew Commuter Bike ($499 value), courtesy of Ponderosa Cyclery + Tour and Dundee Bank
- Premier Event Experience, courtesy of Midtown Crossing. Enjoy reserved VIP seating at your choice of any one of Midtown Crossing’s summer events: Jazz on the Green, Monday Night at the Movies, Zydeco Festival or Playing with Fire
"Did I just say "skippity hop"?! That's how much I like it. It makes me use phrases like "skippity hop"."
Not quite sure how to navigate about town without your car? There's a web page of resources on the site including contact information for a real person named Shelby who will help you navigate your commuting choices. I have the good fortune of being on a committee at work with Shelby. She's a lovely patient, helpful person.
Frequent readers of this blog know that I'm a fan of taking the bus. Talk about stress-free travel and there are bus stops a mere skippity hop from our building.
Did I just say "skippity hop"?!
That's how much I like it. It makes me use phrases like "skippity hop".
Take the pledge and get a free 10 ride bus pass!
That's 5 free trips to your favorite Old Market hangout (and equals 10 trips to log in the challenge!). No parking woes!
So to recap: It's easy to sign up. The minimum car/transportation swap is only one trip a week. You have a chance to win amazing early bird sign up/weekly prizes, a friendly person to call if you need help navigating, gain better health, get a free bus pass, and make new friends. What else could make this more wonderful?
A party to kickoff the challenge! Don't miss it! The Midtown on the Move Launch Party is April 27 at 6:30-8:30 p.m. just up the street in the Blackstone district's Scriptown Brewery (3922 Farnam).
I'm excited to see where this challenge will take us. See you on the bus!
